Vernoemd naar
Pierre Bayle (1647-1706), Franse protestants filosoof, historicus en criticus. Hield aanhoudend pleidooien voor religieuze tolerantie. Dat was heel bijzonder en gevaarlijk in zijn tijd. In 1681 week Bayle dan ook uit naar Rotterdam om zijn kritische beschouwingen te kunnen blijven schrijven.
Doelstelling
Reflectie en debat stimuleren op het gebied van kunst, wetenschap en maatschappij in Nederland, in het bijzonder in Rotterdam.
Organisatie
De Pierre Bayle Stichting. Zij organiseert sinds 1990 elke twee jaar een lezing in Rotterdam. Daarvoor wordt een wetenschapper gevraagd zijn of haar filosofische visie op de actualiteit te geven.
