Genoemd naar
Prof.dr. Adriaan Blaauw (1914-2010), astronoom. Hij deed onderzoek naar de structuur van ons Melkwegstelsel en de vorming van sterren. Werkte vanaf 1953 bij de Yerkes sterrenwacht in Chicago en werd in 1957 directeur van het Sterrenkundig Laboratorium Kapteyn. Leidde de European Southern Observatory van 1970 tot 1975 en werkte tot zijn pensioen in Leiden.
Doelstelling
Een internationaal vooraanstaand astronoom een lezing laten geven voor een breed publiek.
Organisatie
Het Kapteyn Instituut, de afdeling sterrenkunde van de Faculteit voor Wiskunde en Natuurwetenschappen van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (genoemd naar prof.dr. J.C. Kapteyn, de eerste hoogleraar sterrenkunde). In 1997 is de Blaauw-leerstoel ingesteld, een visiting professorship. In 1999 is met de jaarlijkse lezingen begonnen.
